New York-21 companies are participating in a pilot program in the United States to create a domestic circulation system for textile-to-textile products.
Led by Accelerating Circularity, these trials will track the ability to mechanically and chemically recover cotton, polyester, and cotton/polyester blends from post-consumer and post-industrial raw materials that meet commercial requirements.
These requirements include standard minimum order quantities, performance specifications and aesthetic considerations. During the trial period, data will be collected on logistics, the volume of recycled content, and any gaps and challenges within the system. The pilot will involve denim, T-shirts, towels and wool.
The project aims to determine whether the existing infrastructure in the United States can support the production of large-scale circular products. Similar efforts are also being made in Europe.
The initial project launched in 2019 was funded by the Walmart Foundation. Target, Gap Inc., Eastman, VF Corp., Recover, European Outdoor Group, Sonora, Inditex and Zalando provided additional funding.
Companies wishing to be considered for participation in the trial, including logistics providers, collectors, sorters, pre-processors, recyclers, fiber manufacturers, finished product manufacturers, brands, retailers, traceability and assurance suppliers, test experiments Offices, standard systems and support services should be registered through www.acceleratingcircularity.org/stakeholder-registry.
Karla Magruder, the founder of the non-profit organization, pointed out that the development of a complete circulation system requires cooperation between many companies.
“It is essential for our work to have all participants in the recycling textile to the textile system log in,” she added. “Our mission has been strongly supported by major brands and retailers, and we are now about to show real products manufactured in the circulatory system.”
